So you want to do a car hire Glasgow style, eh? You understand that you're headed for the land where Scotch Whiskey was born, right? Or maybe, you say, this is the explicit reason that you're headed there.

Being Scots-Irish, I'm ashamed to say that I don't know as much about one of my ancestral lands as I'd like to, but I do know a few things. Oh, I mean beyond the whole Braveheart thing (yeah, I saw it about twelve times and am open to seeing it again soon). Somehow I think that this applies to most of us.

Yet you're thinking of driving in Scotland, and that's not a bad proposition at all. Oh, sure, there are the characteristic narrow roads up in the highlands that seems to plague most of Europe, but that's half the reason we go, isn't it?

Europeans weren't blessed with a slow encroachment of a mass of land just after the birth of the Industrial Revolution and appropriate city planning to reflect this. By the time the steam engine had been perfected into the train engines that carried the world on its back, Europe was already bloated with millennia-old towns and cities. Americans are so lucky.

Another aspect to driving in Scotland is sanity. I've lived or been in every quarter of the world and seen how people everywhere drive. People in India, the Philippean Islands, Italy, and the Commonwealth State of Virginia, all as an example, definitely don't know the first thing about sane or safe driving. In fact, in most places in the world, simple courtesies and precautions like the use of turn signals seem to be seen as a sign of weakness.

The only people that I can definitely say know how to drive both safely and functionally -categorically, are the Dutch. Those people give driving a great name. Next on the list would probably be the Scots. They're not as concerned about, say, bicyclists and pedestrians as are the Dutch, but it's certainly a close second. Car hire from Scotland is certainly an exercise in intelligence.

With car hire in Scotland there are many options and few pitfalls. British sensibility sweeps through most areas in Scottish life and driving and car hire in Scotland are no exceptions. You can easily find many different models, from all around the world, including many fuel-efficient cars that have yet to be seen much in the United States.

Another great option is the diesel driven engine. These are very common in Scotland (and Europe as a whole, with 36% of all new car registrations being diesel according to the Bosch Archives). A note on diesel for a moment, especially if you plan to further look into car hire Scotland.

Diesel engines were originally designed with one of the expressed purposes of being good for the environment. After some time the original hemp-bases fuel that was designed for the engine was abandoned for a synthetic fuel, what we call diesel fuel today. This fuel is usually 20 cents cheaper per liter (do the math -you save a lot of money using diesel).

So consider diesel, or go with what feels right. The Scots are a friendly, loveable lot (tho' they do tend to speak a bit quickly, so good luck with that). Get online and reserve a car hire Scotland, for a great time touring a wonderful country. Enjoy!
